Beyond the glitz and glamour, Greater Miami and Miami Beach is also home to colorful, artsy Wynwood. This thriving neighborhood is a haven for aspiring painters, graffiti artists, creatives and young innovators alike. Its focal point is Wynwood Walls, an outdoor museum made up of giant wall murals. Covering six buildings, these walls have become a blank canvas for major artists all over the world.

When you visit Wynwood Walls, you’ll get a taste of Miami’s diverse art world. Covered in everything from graffiti quotes and large-scale pop art murals to abstract paintings and out-of-this-world sculptures, Wynwood Walls is as unique as it is creative.

The Artists of Wynwood Walls

The muralists who have earned a spot on Wynwood Walls have changed over the years, but a distinct handful have made a name for themselves in the process.

Coming to Miami from Metz, France, self-taught artist Mantra has become famous for painting murals inspired by his childhood memories of French gardens. Known for his impressive use of color and detail, his realistic works bring owls, spiders, birds and, in Wynwood, butterflies to life on the side of the Warby Parker storefront.

Artist duo Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn, known professionally as Jessie and Katey, are committed to making public spaces vibrant, colorful and playful and bring joy and boost the emotions of all who experience them. Based in Baltimore, they use bold colors, abstract patterns and geometric shapes on otherwise plain façades, making their murals impossible to miss – or not smile at.

Miami’s own Ernesto Maranje, a Cuban American artist who didn’t discover his passion and talent until he was 27 years old and in the Coast Guard, uses his art to promote Mother Nature’s beauty and our need to protect it. With works everywhere from Ukraine, Iraq and Jordan to Lebanon, Greece, Spain and, of course, Miami’s Wynwood Walls, Maranje uses acrylic and spray paints to create evocative, charming images of plants, landscapes, biodiversity and animals, such as birds, bears, apes and big cats. His goal? “To reveal the past, anticipate the future and discover the relationship of all living things.”

In addition to these popular artists, Wynwood Walls features works by Kai, Tristan Eaton, Tats Cru, Kelsey Montague, Fin DAC, OS Gemeos and many others.

Tours & Visitor Information

Tickets to Wynwood Walls are available online (children 12 and under are free but need a ticket). In addition to general admission (where you view the artwork on your own), several packages are available, including a guided tour, an early access tour, a tour with an artist and a private tour. There are even spray paint courses available for those who want to see what it’s like to spray-paint a mural.

Both Wynwood Walls and The Wynwood Walls Shop are open Sundays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Doors to Wynwood Walls close 30 minutes before closing time.

History of Wynwood

Back in the 1970s, Wynwood was a collection of aging warehouses. Then, in the early 2000s, Tony Goldman – entrepreneur, historic preservationist, developer, restaurateur, hotelier and patron of the arts – saw its potential.

The man behind the revival of SoHo in New York City and South Beach, Goldman focused his company, Goldman Properties, on turning the failing neighborhood into a cultural oasis. Opening with Art Basel 2009, Wynwood Walls brought to life Goldman’s vision for an open-air art gallery.

That later blossomed into a greater neighborhood of art appreciation, and Wynwood’s monthly art walks confirmed the creator’s vision of a neighborhood that would become a canvas for urban street art.

In today’s pedestrian-friendly Wynwood, art is everywhere you turn. In addition to the Wynwood Walls themselves, visitors can see buildings surrounding the park that are covered in murals that constantly change as artists find inspiration in the neighborhood.
